Resources Guide

The following books and resources are ones that Buzz Off have reviewed and in some cases can recommend to people who want to find out more about malaria and other mosquito borne diseases.

Although some resources may be available in internet stores such as Amazon or Fishpond, we recomend that you first try the Buzz Off Online Store to see if the title is available there; profits from these sales will help us to fight Malaria. If the Buzz Off Online Store does not have the required title then try Teaching Aids at Low Cost in the UK (
TALC) TALC have a wide range their prices are reasonable and they are efficient with their dispatches of products to overseas customers.

TALC is a not for profit charity that exists to promote the health of children and advancement of medical knowledge in the UK and throughout the world by providing and developing quality educational material. They have a great range of books and other resources, their prices are very competitive and they will ship orders all over the world.

Where we can find an online review or other information about the resource, a link is attached to the image of its cover.

Images: Malbk1.jpg Malaria: A traveller's guide.
By Dr Andrew Jamieson and Dr Stephen Toovey.

This book is a rewrite of a book that was originally called A Layman's Guide to Malaria By Martine Maurel.

It is well written for the layman, is informative and up to date. It is a great option for the person who does not like medical jargon or technical analysis.

This book is readily available from internet bookstores but we recommend that you try to get it direct from
TALC first.

Images: Malbk3.jpg Malaria:A handbook for health professionals
From Malaria Consortium.

Where "Malaria: a Traveller's Guide" is a book written for the layman, this book is definitely written with the healthcare professional in mind and carries a great deal more detailed information.

Published in 2007 this book of 220 pages covers important aspects of malaria, diagnosis, treatment, epidemiology, and prevention. Some sections are rather technical, but it is useful for all health workers who work in areas where malaria is a problem. The tables and appendices will prove very helpful to people who are actually working in the field.

I have used this book in training Primary Health Care workers and found it to be an excellent resource.

This book is available from
TALC ; copies can also be purchased from the Buzz Off Online Store

There is a lot on the internet about this book. It is written as a text book and therefore is a more complicated read.

It was printed in 2001, and we recommended it for the teacher, researcher, student or healthcare professional working in the field.

This book is readily available from internet bookstores but we recommend that you try to get it direct from
TALC first.

Images: Malbk8smsmsm.jpg   The Use Malaria Rapid Diagnostic Tests - World Health Organization

This 19 page booklet gives a background and to the use of the RDT kits. It is a good resource for someone who has not had experience with RDTs before. However it does not show you how the tests are read, that information is usually found in the RDT packaging.

We have seen this book advertised for as much as $US10 a copy which is over priced for what the booklet actually is.

This book is not available from TALC but a free copy in pdf format can be downloaded here

Images: Buzzing Kids.jpg   Buzzing Children - By Damian Morgan

This level 3 reader from the McMillan is part of the Living Health series. It tells the story of a girl in an African village whose grandfather dies from Malaria.

Much to the annoyance of the adults in the village, the girl and her friends wage war against mosquitoes in the village as a sign of love for her late grandfather. However the actions of the children start to impact the numbers of people in the village who are contracting the disease and soon everyone agrees that waging war on mosquitoes is a good thing.

The back of the book contains a fact file that shows, the mosquito breeding cycle, how to manage water in the village and how to recognize and treat malaria.

This is an excellent resource for children.

This 128 page book is part of the Diseases and People series.

The book covers a lot of material about mosquitoes and their diseases particularly West Nile Virus. It also mentions Yellow Fever, Malaria, Dengue fever and mosquito borne diseases that are found in animals.

It is easy reading and is written in a similar style as the book Malaria by Melissa Abramovitz. The book is well referenced and is ideal for the person who is researching mosquito borne diseases but doesn't want to be overloaded with too much technical information.

This is another kids book about mosquitoes. It's 32 pages are well designed and the photos and drawings are excellent.

The information is interesting and factual, and it makes the
connection for kids that mosquitoes are not just interesting insects but they are carriers of deadly diseases and we need to protect ourselves from them.

Images: MalBk10.jpg   Malaria: What it means and how avoided. By Joseph F Edwards

We originally bought this book because we thought it was a new title; we were wrong. It is in fact the re-release of a book that was written in 1881.

The book is interesting in that it shows how people of that time viewed Malaria; but the information held in its pages is dead wrong.

According to the author Malaria comes from bad air caused by rotting vegetable matter; gases from this rotting matter are breathed in and get into the blood and poison the organs; the disease has nothing to with symptoms of fevers and chills.

Mr Edwards does not use the word mosquito in any of the 81 pages of this book!

An interesting curio but definitely not a reference book of any substance!
